Trace Ancestors

How doi I trace my Sicilian ancestors?

My great grandmother was called Maria Garabaldi and apparently was born in America possibly New York. My grandmother has said her family came from Sicily. Any ideas how I would trace my ancestors?

Start by finding her immigration records, marriage license and census records. Figure out everyone’s names and find any clues on their immigration and naturalization documents. If you can find a town, then you find the Catholic parishes in the area and ask for a copy of her baptismal certificate and her parents’ marriage registry. The only easy-to-access records in Sicily belong to the churches.
