How To Beat A History Of Diabetes

With aging, there are many things to consider about health. And if your family history includes troubling medical conditions, there’s much more at stake. Fifty-year-old Julia Hoyle, a financial analyst with Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina, was scared she might contract diabetes.

She was middle-aged and overweight with a family history of diabetes. In an effort to prevent contracting diabetes, which is incurable, she went on a diet recommended by Dr. Eric Westman, co-author of New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for Shedding Weight and Feeling Great.

The Atkins diet promotes eating protein, such as cheese, meat and eggs, and also veggies. But it forbids breads, cereals, rice, pasta and sweets. Julia wasn’t sure how she would fare on a diet without bagels and ice cream, but her doctor encouraged her to hang in there at least two weeks to see a difference. And she did see a difference. Julia now maintains her carb levels below 20 grams per day.

For breakfast, usual fare includes bacon or sausage along with eggs or omelet. She has a mid-morning snack of low-carb yogurt, then a salad for lunch with some sort of protein on it – tuna, cheese, chicken or steak and dressing. Dinners include meat, chicken or fish and vegetables and sometimes nuts, berries and a little alcohol. To curb sugar cravings, she may have a piece of low-fat cheesecake.

Her efforts paid off.  In seven months, she lost 40 pounds and dropped 4 dress sizes, from an 18 to a 12. By far the biggest reward? Seeing the numbers improve, showing her type 2 diabetes risk was dropping.  When she started her diet, she had extreme signs of insulin resistance with a 42-inch waist. After shedding the excess pounds, her insulin levels evened out and her waist had shrunk down to 31 inches.
