Most modern study about the condition suggests that it can be caused by a hormonal imbalance. Women that have a family history of this condition are more likely to pick up PCOS. Hence a combination of hereditary and environmental circumstances can cause the problem but what are the symptoms ?

There are three main warning signs.

The most typical is erratic periods. Irregular periods are basically a by product of cysts growing on the ovaries. Cysts are tiny sacs of fluid or even blood in some cases that grow over the ovaries. If many grow on one or both of the ovaries this may stop the release of eggs during the month to month cycle that explains why periods don’t happen.

The second classic symptom is that extra androgen (or male hormone) is released into the system. Although it is not possible to perceive this, the hormone will influence the appearance of the individual. She’s going to take on classic male qualities. For instance, she might become hairier. She could grow hair around the face or below the nose.

The 3rd symptom has previously been noted. It is the development of ovarian growths. Functional cysts develop on a regular basis but generally contract. In the case of a woman with PCOS, the cysts stay on the ovary and more develop. This could stop the production of an egg which sometimes stop periods occurring or make it difficult to conceive if you are trying to have a baby.

Ovarian cysts also can result in pain in the pelvic area. If they continue to enlarge they can twist the ovary that may permanently damage the ovaries and instigate infertility. Most cysts are functional and just shrink away after a month or so but others can be more serious and should be checked. Getting a regular examination of the area is advised.

Of course these signs and symptoms along with the PCOS itself can be prevented if you keep your body in harmony. A holistic treatment plan might be able to do that for you. Essentially a holistic treatment and preventive care plan for Ovarian cysts and PCOS entails consuming the appropriate foods. It also handles getting exercise, avoiding stress and forgoing pharmaceuticals and medications.
